THE RAWDOG GAYSIAN PLAYWRIGHT CHALLENGE: Holey Gay Periodt
SEASON 3

Photography: Alyssa Medel
Back by popular demand, our queer Asian writer’s challenge had a double-bill slot with Same Same But Different’s queer poetry night to bring the gay agenda to the Basement Theatre.
This year, we dared four queer Asian writers to create the play they’d least want to write; in just three days. Each writer delivers a short duologue or monologue themed around the silly season, sealed in an envelope until showtime.
On the night, actors are cast from the audience for chaotic cold readings of each brand-new piece.
Hosted by Chye-Ling Huang and Sean Rivera, the result is the worst delivery of the queer agenda you've ever experienced. An experiment in queer joy, failure and some kind of silly spirit that embraces the hideousness of the season.

AUDIENCES SAID:
"It should be an institition! Honestly my favourite part of the silly season."
"I absolutely loved the chaotic energy of the show! It felt like anything could happen, and that made it all the more exciting."
"This show is exactly what we need! The rawness of the plays was such a vibe. So important to highlight these queer writers as we don’t often get a space to play."
"Seriously had so much fun watching this train wreck."

THE RAWDOG GAYSIAN PLAYWRIGHT CHALLENGE
SEASON ONE: six plays, three nights
presented Feb 8 - 10th 2024 | by Chye-Ling huang and Sean rivera
The Rawdog Gaysian Playwright Challenge says, instead of starting with trauma, why don’t we start from dumbness and see where that takes us instead?
In the spirit of punishment-for-fun, six Slaysian writers are forced to earnestly write a one act play that is the opposite of their artistic taste in two chaotic weeks.
Three shows, six one-act plays, and the birth of some of the worst and most hilarious queer works Aotearoa has seen.

THE RAWDOG GAYSIAN PLAYWRIGHT Sleigh-balls Deep Xmas Challenge
SEASON TWO
presented dec 11th 2024 | by Chye-Ling huang and Sean rivera
Back by popular demand and unfortunately for us, The Rawdog Gaysian Playwright Challenge returns for an exclusive, one night holi-gay season…The Rawdog Gaysian Playwright Sleigh-balls Deep Xmas Challenge!!
A bunch of Gaysian (or Sleighsian?) writers choose a Christmas trope they truly despise, and over just three stressful days before opening, create a monologue or scene based on it to the best of their abilities. Join us on Santa’s naughty list as we subvert the heteronormative narratives of love and peace, to once again create some truly horrible works from a place of pure, frosty hatred.
To make it even more raw, we’ll cast it live on the night, and have our fellow mistle-hoes be the last piece of our Frankenstein‘s Snowman of a Christmas show.
